CHC53315 Diploma of Mental Health is a course designed to give you the foundation knowledge needed for working in the Community Sector. This course provides you with the knowledge and skills required to perform as a professional community services worker, across a variety of settings within the social and community services industry. These may include areas such as mental health, homelessness, family and domestic violence, child protection, employment support and migrant services. This qualification reflects the role of workers who provide services to clients in relation to mental health issues. They can provide counselling, referral, advocacy and education/health promotion services. These workers are required to have high level specialist knowledge, skills and competencies especially in regard to laws affecting people with mental health issues, the range of services available to them and health issues related to mental health.

CHC53315 Diploma of Mental Health is delivered with Victoria and Commonwealth Government funding for students who meet the eligibility criteria.

Diploma of Mental Health course takes approximately 1200 – 2400 hours which includes class time and 240 hours of work placement in a community services facility. But the Duration for each learner will depend on each individual’s skills and knowledge. For example, students with higher education qualifications and students who are already employed in the industry will find themselves completing the course within a shorter time frame as compared to learners with lower education and no experience in the industry. JTI considers each learner on an individual basis and learners who may want to complete the course at a shorter time frame than the one recommended by AQF will be given the following options:

  • Undertake an assessment with a JTI staff member to demonstrate their capacity to undertake the course within a shorter time frame
  • Produce evidence of higher learning or previous experience
  • Undertake an RPL if applicable.
  • Commit to attending online support classes as well as face to face classes and a commitment to self-study

On average, a learner should allocate thirty hours per week for learning and assessments.

Minimum tuition fees for Indigenous students

Under the Indigenous Completions Initiative, all enrolments undertaken by Indigenous students will be charged at the concession rate. This includes Diploma programs.

NOTE: Skills First Program is a subsidised training scheme through the Victorian Government. It is available to eligible residents in Victoria.

Students in Victoria who qualify for government funding are only allowed to undertake 2 courses at the same level in their lifetime with the exclusion of:

  1. the Victorian Certificate of Education; Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (Intermediate or Senior); International Baccalaureate Diploma; and senior secondary school certificates from other Australian jurisdictions;
  2. qualifications listed in the Foundation Skills List (Attachment 1 to these Guidelines);
  3. any VET certificates undertaken as part of a senior secondary qualification (including School Based Apprenticeships/Traineeships);
  4. where an individual is transitioning from a superseded qualification to the current version of the same qualification; and
  5. Where an individual is recommencing training in the same qualification (at either the same or a different provider).

Work Placement Program

For candidates not already employed in the sector, work placements will be required in order to meet the evidence requirements of all of the units. The Community Services sector strongly supports the use of work placements for learning and there is an expectation that assessors will, in so far as possible, use the workplace for assessment. This approach will make assessment decisions more authentic and valid. Candidates should be given the opportunity to demonstrate how they can meet the requirements of the unit of competence/s under the conditions and variables of the real workplace. Work Placement is not optional. Students not working in the sector are required to complete 240 hours of work placement. Students working in the sector need to talk to their trainer to establish if their current work place will qualify for placements in this course.

Those who have tried to secure Work Placement know how frustrating it can be. Well, luckily for our students, we have taken the stress out of the process by assisting you in getting work placement. The time you would have spent hassling for practical places, can now be used more fruitfully.

The process is as follows:

  • Upon satisfactory completion of at least 7 Units, you can apply for Work Placement by completing the written or online form at any of our campuses. On the form you indicate your availability and a preferred suburb.
  • Although we do our best to place you in a community services sectors of your choice, we cannot guarantee that this will happen every time as availability of space in these facilities can be a factor
  • Once you submit your form, keep checking which community services sectors are available for you.
  • Please note that community services sectors prefer students who are flexible and reliable.
  • On average it takes about two weeks to secure Work Placement in a Community Services Sectors.
  • We also request the students to approach work place facilities near their homes to seek for placement. Ask your trainer for a letter of Introduction. Together we work towards the completion of your course.

Requirements for Work Placement

The following are the pre-requisites for work placement:

  • Satisfactory completion of a minimum of 8 units (Theory Part)
  • HLTAID003 Provide first aid
  • Police Check (Victoria)/ Fit and proper person check (South Australia)
  • Work with Children Check (Victoria)/ Blue card (Queensland)

Recognition of Prior Learning and Credit Transfer (RPL)

Recognition of Prior Learning is the process that recognises a student’s current skills and experience, regardless of where and when the learning occurred. Entry Requirements

The entry requirements for this course are as follows:

  • An online application or written enrolment form.
  • Successful completion of language, literacy and numeracy assessment - appropriate literacy and numeracy skills for both the demands of training and the work place are required.
  • Pre-training Review
  • Unique Student Identifier (USI) (Ask our staff how to get this)
  • Identification documents, one of which has a photograph of the student such as a passport and/or driver license.
  • A satisfactory national police clearance certificate and Working with Children Check (VIC students only) and Blue Card for QLD students will be required for work placement.
  • Department of Community and Social Inclusion (DCSI) check (SA students)

Students that are government funded require further identification documents that meet the criteria of the respective state government funding bodies such as:

  • Proof of Australian Permanent Resident/ Citizenship
  • Proof of Concession Eligibility
  • Proof of Victorian Residency
  • Victorian Training Guarantee (VTG) form

It is preferred that a student under 25 has completed year 10. If a student is over 25, they should have relevant work/life experience

Pre Training Review & Language, Literacy and Numeracy Assessment:

Prior to course commencement, students will be required to undertake a pre training Review which will include a Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) Assessment. This assessment is used to determine the student’s needs, capability, interests as well as level of language, literacy and numeracy as required to complete the course and whether the student requires additional support. All students must undertake this pre training assessment before enrolling into this course. Students who are assessed as not having the required level of language, literacy and numeracy skills will be referred to external support networks to work with them on skill development in the required area/s. Students can re-apply for enrolment once they have developed skills in that area. Students will also be advised by JTI staff members of the best course to undertake as a result of this pre training review.

Blended Face to Face and Online Learning
Our face-to-face learning is delivered at several delivery sites as well as in our campuses. Classes for CHC53315 Diploma of Mental Health course are held at a variety of times so as to be convenient and flexible for today’s busy schedules. All our students have both face-to-face and online learning available to them. Assessments are to be submitted via the online Moodle platform .This being a Diploma qualification, all students are expected to be conversant with computers, and hence assignments and reading resources will all be uploaded online. Students are able to use computers at JTI if they have no computer access at home, but is advisable every student possess a computer. Classes are held regularly at various campuses in Melbourne. Campus timetables are updated every few weeks and are available on request. Online support classes are held weekly and all students are welcome to take part.

Delivery Venue

This course will be delivered at one of our campuses or a hired venue. Some students may take the option of attending weekly online classes. Work placement is undertaken at various industry facilities that are not related to Job Training Institute, hence, we are unable to guarantee work placement at a specific facility. Students will be advised of the venue of their work placement that they must attend as their course progresses.

Third Party arrangements

Job Training Institute does not deliver this course through third party arrangements. We use brokers or agents for recruitment of students, but not for training.

  • The learning and support needs of all students is assessed upon entry into a course.
  • All students are aware of how to access the services and resources they require to successfully complete their course.

Online live support classes

  • Work Placement – Job Training Institute facilitates Work Placement for its students and a Work Placement Coordinator is always in handy to assist students with any work placement issues. To achieve this qualification, the candidate must have completed at least 160 hours of work as detailed in the Assessment Requirements of the units of competency, but JTI will undertake 240 hours of work placement which is the recommendation from the Industry.
  • Student Support – Our trainers are always available and willing to assist students with their studies and assignments via several methods ranging from chat, email, phone calls, and walk-in among others. Job Training Institute offers students weekly live online classes moderated by our trainers. We provide students with support in planning their individual learning plans.

Job Training Institute is responsible for the quality of the training and assessment in compliance with VET standards, and for the issuance of the AQF certification documentation.

JTI does not guarantee the following:

  1. That a learner will successfully complete a training product on our scope of registration. Learners need to put effort in their study and completion of assignments and JTI will provide the trainers and required resources to enable the learner successfully complete their study.
  2. A training product can be completed in a manner which does not meet the requirements of clause 1.1 and 1.2 of VET standards 2015 e.g in a shorter period of time than the AQF specifications.
  3. A learner will obtain a particular employment outcome where this is outside the control of JTI. JTI is a training organisation and has no control of employment outcomes.
